Churches face “unsustainable” financial and practical pressures unless the government strengthens support for the UK’s historic places of worship, MPs have warned in a major report calling for a new approach to protecting the nation’s built heritage.

As Christian giving charity Stewardship marks its 120th anniversary this year, it has reported its highest-ever level of donations and grant-making, with £161m given through the organisation during 2025 and more than a million grants distributed for the first time in its history.

The report looks at over 20 countries but also includes a section on “hindrances to religious freedom in the West”.
